Flat River Report video

Flat River Steelhead

A short video I shot of "Trout Drifter" landing a nice steelhead in front of the King Mill in Lowell Michigan on the Flat River.

This video shows that she had she had her hands full as this fish went around the tree and it looked like she might lose the fish.... but she did not.

Great Job landing that fish - Trout Drifter

Orange Yarn Ball with Red head.

This pattern is a loose yarn ball with red for the thread.

I personally like to use a loose pattern for spring season as many fish will pick up things near beds and the yarn will stick to the teeth a second or two longer leaving extra time to get a hook set.

I also have had some action on Black Streamer Pattern with a little silver crystal flash inside.  This often looks like a minnow or small fish snatching eggs.

Good Luck
Tight Lines!
A nice Male caught on a orange yarn ball pattern tipped with a wax worm.
I got a much better hook set into this fish.

He put up plenty of fight and took me down river about 100 - 150 yards until we got slower water and I could net him.

Fish On....

Black Stone Fly - Fish

I picked up a nice Steelhead on a black stone fly.  I had about 10 minutes of fighting and fun including some tail dancing....

The fish finally shook out the hook or found a rock to tangle the line on!

No fish....back at it as soon as I rig up again.

Evening Run at Moores Park

The evening shaped up to be pretty nice overall for the people on the river.

The sun was out, cool temps and little to no wind.  I ate lunch and watched the 8 or 9 guys fishing during my break and many people picked up small fish but no keepers.  Unfortunately I could not stay later and the fishing may have improved as the evening time passed.

Good Luck & Tight Lines

Choice of bait?

I have been speaking with a number of fishermen over the last few visits and it seems most people use spawn.  I see some people using flies or wax worms with an occasional spinner or spoon.

I am going to say at this time it appears as follows:

1. Spawn
2. Wax Worm / Wiggler
3. Fly (wet )
4. Spinner / Spoon

Each spot has it's own tricks and as I learn more about how to get this one to produce fish.... I will share what I learn.

Tight Lines.

April 18 - Snow

The morning fishing was very cool, snowing and little wind.
It was a very peaceful time and with the overcast it seemed like it would be starting off to be a good steelhead fishing day.

I went down river a bit where the water slowed up just a little and began to drift a waxworm / grub fly that I made up with just a little touch of crystal flash to give it a slight sparkle.

After a few flips of the fly into a nice run - a very large steelhead rolled but missed the fly and I wasn't able to get it to respond again.  I caught a glimpse of a few other fish, but no takers.

April 17 - Cold & Windy (Grand River)

Cold and wind doesn't stop the fishermen for going out.... for a while.

My friend Jack is in the background and son Nicholas shown here drifting a spawn bag and having fun with smaller fish hitting now and then.  Nicholas elected to wear his warm, fur lined hunting hat... Good Call today!
